However, matching by percentages may not be feasible for employees with the highest salaries in a company. In these circumstances, matching contributions to a set dollar amount is common.

The Vesting Process

Employers may set up a vesting schedule for employees even while making contributions. This means that all matches to 401k contributions don’t routinely belong to the employee. Furthermore, employees must stay with their companies for a specific period without being terminated before vesting all contributions. During that time, the percentage of the company’s contribution grew gradually.
