What Can Short-Term Disability Benefits Do for Me?

Life can be full of unexpected events. While many of these occurrences may be easily managed, others require more preparation and consideration to stay ahead of any bumps in the road. What happens when things don’t go as planned? If you are suffering from injury or illness that prevents you from working, you may be eligible for short term-disability benefits as a temporary solution.

Short-term disability benefits are benefits that temporarily cover a percentage of your salary while you are unable to work due to illness or injury.

In Short, Short-Term Disability Benefits

Short-term disability benefits are benefits that temporarily cover a percentage of your salary while you are unable to work due to illness or injury. Coverage typically begins between one to 14 days following the initial incident that prevents an employee from working, and the employer typically provides this as part of group products. An employee can receive group coverage for short-term disability by either a self-funded plan designated by the employer or a contract agreement via an insurer. It is important to note, however, that each state carries its own policies for minimum coverage amounts.

Coverage Terms and Considerations

In order to attain short-term disability benefits from their employer, an employee must be working with the company full-time for a certain period of time before receiving benefits. Once this period has passed, an employee is eligible for a paid percentage of their weekly salary for up to 52-weeks if they can provide official documentation to prove their illness or injury. This temporary coverage typically does not exceed the 52 week maximum.
